98-Mile Rapids, Grand Canyon. 30 x 48.

The bottom of the canyon is walled with black granite, and it is
somber. As you approach the rapids, a greasy calm covers the water,
and a chill draft from the spray drifts by your face as you read faded
memorials to people drowned there years ago. You hear thunder and see
nothing ahead. You feel some of the apprehension of the Powell
Expedition as your raft accelerates and suddenly you shoot into the
tawny foam.
