Sunset over Funerius. 14 x 16.

The time is several hours past full moon on earth, and in the
foreground are the Command Module and LEM of Apollo prior to
separation for landing. Oh, how I longed to be an astronaut! I
figured I was technically qualified and had an overwhelming urge to go
out there and see. Early in the ‘60s I visited my friend Dr. Randy
Loveless, who looked at my six and one-half feet and had a good laugh.
"The Government isn't going to spend an extra billion dollars on this
space program enlarging capsules just to fit you," he explained.
Therefore, I have to imagine it from what I can see through a
telescope and in photographs: the eerie lack of atmosphere, the raw
white sunlight on the barren gray maria, and most of all the empty
black space. Not a velvet black, not a blue-black, but a deep,
endless 4-degree Kelvin black.
