The Soft Green of August. 42 x 72.
The afternoon rains of August cause the ground around Albuquerque to
sprout new growth. The air is heavy with water, and the morning sky,
before clouds start to form, is almost white. As the sun rises over
the Sandia Mountains northeast of town, its searching rays of light
graze the five-thousand-foot cliff of the western face, lighting to a
bright green all the new leaves on the trees, bushes and grasses. In
the foreground grows and spreads a century-old cottonwood on the
alluvial plain.
