The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone from Red Rock Point. 72 x 108.
The Yellowstone River drains the large lake in the center of
Yellowstone Park. There is first a short cataract and then a deep
second one that we see in this painting. The walls of the canyon are
composed of a softly compacted volcanic ash and tinted from creamy
white to yellow iron oxide down to orange. Hard lumps of darker
igneous rock are dispersed in the softer ash causing it to weather in
many columns and fantastic shapes. We are on the north wall about
half way down.
