On the northwest coast of Maui, the basalt turns an orange-brown as it
dips into the sea. When the sun strikes the water, turning the sea
bright with a typical Pacific blue, the combination is spectacular.
While we painted the study for this canvas, whales spouted, back
flipped, and generally had a ponderous good time off the point.
