Field Study: Poggi Memorial, Florence. 12 x 18.
High above the town, south of the Arno and up-river from San Croce is
a magnificent view from a piazza named for Michelangelo. As I set up
my easel, however, I found I was more drawn to paint the intimately
Italian scene behind me than the vast sprawl of red roofs and Duomo to
the northwest. Here were cypresses, stone pines and sycamores growing
next to a neo-classical monument and church. Their shapes and dark
greens are unique.
