North View, Monument Valley Triptych Study. 16 x 41.

his scene is painted at sunset, mid-summer. We are in the Navajo
Nation in Utah looking south. The most fascinating phenomenon I
noticed while painting this scene was that right before the sun set as
the shadows reached out across the flat parts of the landscape they
turn turquoise, complementing the hot light on the standing buttes.
The triptych studies were painted as preliminary images for the large
mural project at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. These
studies were made from small field studies painted at the sites. They
were, in turn, used to prepare larger scale models for the murals.
The project was painted from 1991 until 1996.
