The First Day of Winter. 36 x 36.

The sun reached the Tropic of Capricorn about midnight at the end of
the 21st and beginning of the 22nd of December. On the 22nd we had a
light snowstorm that cleared at sundown. As the clouds broke I saw
the tops of the mountains in yellow light, and in the small patches of
light coming down the mountain the light dropped from yellow to orange
to plum-color. These moments occur so quickly you can only paint them
from memory.
