Mauve Sunset on the Coast of Sabah. 32 x 48.
1. All one has to do is experience one of these sunsets to realize
that anything is possible in nature with light. Of course, the camera
can catch the actual wave lengths, but, as usual, we had no camera
with us the instant the whole world turned lavender. The camera would
show a bright purple, where the eye, saturated with color, mutes it
and adds almost a fluorescence to the emerald green of the foliage. I
wrote down what I saw in words and drew an ink sketch of the cumulus
clouds on the South China Sea with their tips combed flat by an upper
wind from the east. Sometime we want to go back to Borneo and see this
again, if it happens again.
2. From material for Profiles
film.
Realism is not enough. Intellectual understanding is not
enough. A statement of pure emotion is not enough. It has to be a
union and a parallel effort of all of these things to create something
that's as important as art. And if you want to go even to the
Scriptures, I think of St. Paul's Letter to the Corinthians where he
discusses that although you're a perfect man and you are merciful, you
are generous, you serve the poor—that all of these things avail
nothing if there isn't love. Well, I think that love has to go into
the composition of music, into poetry, into painting, into making
movies, and that when all of these things come together, then you have
good art.
