Off the Coast of Sulawesi. 24 x 48.
When Roz and I revisited Indonesia recently, the first old
acquaintance I saw was the proa or prau, the elegant double outrigger
boat. It measures fifteen feet or more, with high, pinked stern and a
short mast well forward. The yardarm of the triangular sail is set
into a recess in the bow, and the boat is maneuvered by a rudder and
by pulling in or slacking off on the sheet. It can move downwind or
come up into the wind as well as our sailboats. These vessels venture
all over, their bright sails like perky darts of color stuck on the
surface of the water. This one is running free before a sea breeze at
evening toward Manado and Sulawesi.
