Field Study (probably): Cliff at Algodones. 14 x 20.
As its Spanish name implies, Algodones has many large cottonwoods, and
a number of us have gone up there to paint them. Across the Rio
Grande to the west is a low mesa topped with black basalt, the broken
edges of which litter the slanting talus and color it a dull gray. I
have always been attracted to this arroyo down the face of the talus
that exposes the rich colors of the underlying stone. Especially in
afternoon light the eroded area forms a color surprise along the
corridor of gray brooding cliffs.
