Field Study: First Frost on the Sweetbriar. 12 x 18.
The event that captured my attention here was not so much the effect
of the first frost, which yellowed a single area of aspens on the wall
of the valley, but how the orange light of the lowering sun caused the
remaining aspens to appear an olive green, almost gray. In the shadow
cast by the west wall of the Sweetbriar valley, the aspens were
illuminated by blue light from the sky. The green in the shade was
theatrical!
