Burning the Old Gods, 24 x 36.

As we watched Qui Nhon burn, I had a sense of the religious nature of
communism. In the fiery light the ancient temples of the Khmers and
the churches of the French seemed to merge. Like Gotterdammerung,
they seemed to quiver and fade as the fire of a new creed consumed the
ash tree of the world. And through it all came the understanding that
nothing really had changed, for did not the new creed profess itself
the solution for all our human problems and proclaim once more the
first commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"?
