Field Study: Afternoon at Sea, 12 x 16.5.
It has seemed to me that eighteenth and nineteenth century painters
caught the spirit of the sea much better than those of the twentieth
century who "freeze" its motion with a camera. Therefore, I went to
sea in a small boat, and when we had gone far enough out to avoid the
violent tossing of the swells making up into breakers off Carmel, I
did this quick color study into the afternoon sun that was laying a
path of light to the horizon. 1986
