When there is moisture in the West winds of winter that blow over the
vertical face of the Sandia Mountains, the cliff raises the air five
thousand feet. As the air rises it expands and its temperature drops
and the super-cooled droplets of water freeze when they strike the
twigs and bark of the trees along the crest. This rime ice turns the
forest completely white.
